The Simulation Engineering and Testing (SET) Group's
Biomedical Research and Application capabilities span
the spectrum of basic research projects (both in-house
and with prestigious medical institutions), mathematical
simulation, data management and analysis, instrument
development, and system development and evaluation.
Mathematical Simulation
SET has developed a family of mathematical simulations
of internal biomechanical and physiological processes
and whole body motion and response. These simulations
are used to supplement laboratory tests, extrapolate
results across species and population groups, and to
study situations that are too hazardous or too expensive
to test. Based on this work, we have produced model-based
hazard assessments for blast, toxic gas, and projectile
impact trauma that have become standards in military
and civilian applications.

Instrument Development and Testing
SET maintains a biomechanical test laboratory
for impact and gait analysis. We are incorporating emerging
sensor technology in biomedical testing and have developed
new instrument packages that allow laboratory instruments
to be taken into the field. This new data collected
in real-life scenarios, coupled with our mathematical
simulations, are assisting clothing and boot design,
efficiency of load carriage, and the identification
and mitigation of the causes of overuse injuries.
