Pilot Ejection Dynamics
We are using our state-of-the-art fluid dynamics simulation
program, EITACC, to compute the wind blast on the pilot, and
our biomechanical simulation programs to understand the injury
potential of high-speed ejection. This work supports the Air
Force's development of a fourth-generation system for safe
ejection at supersonic speeds.
System Evaluation and Development
The Simulation Engineering and Testing (SET) group applies
its broad knowledge of engineering systems and biomedical
effects to the evaluation of military and civilian systems.
Currently, SET is teamed with Martin Baker, a British manufacturer
of most of the world's military aircraft ejection seats, to
develop the next generation pilot ejection system. SET is
adapting its ability to simulate wind blast loading and its
knowledge of head-neck response and injury to produce an ejection
system that will reduce pilot injury at high speed ejection.
