Auto-Arrestor Background

[Auto-Arrestor<SMALL>TM</SMALL> Dynamometer tests]

Fleeing vehicles pose a very serious threat, and law enforcement personnel have very few options in stopping them. Often-used techniques include bumping, crowding, three cruiser roadblocks, and tire spikes. The first three techniques often result in damage to vehicles and injury to both property and individuals. Tire spikes may not stop the vehicle since the driver can continue on the wheel rims, and may cause the fleeing suspect to lose control of his vehicle, injuring others. In addition, anti-terrorist organizations who must operate in civilian areas have few options that are both effective and potententially nonlethal to bystanders.

The concept of the Auto-Arrestor system will give law enforcement agencies throughout the country better options to safely stop fleeing vehicles than exist today. Three deployment options for the Auto-Arrestor are currently envisioned: one that is employed at a permanent or temporary roadblock, one that can be slid under, and attached to, a stationary vehicle's undercarriage and subsequently activated, one that can be deployed from a pursuing vehicle in a car-chase scenario. The Applied Technologies Sector's current system demonstrates the first two options, while development on the third option is envisioned in the future.
