The Auto-Arrestor system will consist of three main parts: the pulsed power supply, the officer control box, and the vehicle attachment mechanism. Jaycor (now Titan) has performed the proof-of-principle demonstration tests with a laboratory pulsed-power supply. Use of current pulse power technology and packaging for simplified operation should result in a power supply package less than six cubic feet. The officer control box is a small box that permits the officer to arm and disarm the pulsed power supply either directly via a wire or remotely with a coded radio frequency transmission, similar to that used for auto alarm systems.
The primary difference among Titan's three Auto-Arrestor system concepts is the vehicle attachment mechanism. In all cases a direct or near-direct connection to the vehicle is required. This approach allows the Auto-Arrestor to use electrical pulses that are completely safe for the vehicle's occupants and other bystanders while affecting only the electronics in the target vehicle.
The Portable Electronic Roadblock version would use a pad or hose rolled across the highway where the suspect car will run over it, similar to the way tire spike systems are deployed today. Once the system is armed by an officer, the next vehicle to pass over the pad triggers the power supply, causing the vehicle's ignition system to shut down. Design, testing, construction, and fielding of a usable preproduction prototype could be done in about six to eight months.
The Stationary Car Arrestor version would be permanently installed in the roadbed of a checkpoint such as a national border crossing. The system can be rapidly armed by checkpoint personnel to stop vehicles attempting to "bolt" from an inspection by officers or "crashing through" the checkpoint. Once the pulser fires, other vehicles can pass safely over the system without damage.
