Stand-off Mine Detection
Radar System: Operation

To properly locate and identify the targets, our results indicate that a full cycle of data acquisition is required for every one meter of forward movement. Currently, a data acquisition cycle requires one second of time, allowing for a vehicle speed of up to 5 km/hr. Of the one-second data acquisition time increment, only about 0.2 ms are used for actual data acquisition, and the rest of the time interval is applied to instrumentation setup and acquisition times, as well as data transfer. The current instruments are fast-in, slow-out (FISO), making the throughput slow. The slow rate of data acquisition is a major limitation of the equipment used in the present system, which was designed as a prototype and development vehicle. Faster data acquisition is attainable, which will allow the system to perform on vehicles moving at a speed compatible with operational convoy requirements. The current convoy speed requirement is 16 km/hr.
